Shockingly, they’re already gone and strangely, I miss them. We get annual ones but not anywhere close to the same numbers — it’s quite the phenomenon, the periodical emergences.
I really enjoyed the voiceovers of your beautiful poems. And that video! Pretty cool for those of us who don't get to experience this marvel where we live. Incredible little creatures, aren't they?
I love these! I've never seen anyone write about cicadas in such a beautiful way. They are crazy and amazing creatures. God is very creative and so are you. :)
It hadn't really hit me why this emergence seemed so particularly special, until I realized where we were at in the "life cycle" of our family at the time. Pretty crazy to think of all that's transpired since they were last here!
I absolutely love hearing you read these poems 😭 and the chorus in the background! So much coming up with these creatures. Memories and reminders and these gorgeous reflections.
Thank you! I just added a little note at the top of the post, but when I was sitting at the table at that storm was rolling in yesterday afternoon -- I just *knew* I had to record and publish that day. It was a peaceful urgency, if ever there was such a thing, and so creatively fulfilling, just sitting out back in the driveway under our cherry tree.
the "i see" is so powerful, Kristine. we don't get cicadas in this corner of the world and i love insects. thanks for writing something so beautiful about their emergence from out of dark time. the photo in the pea flowers is wild - the little eyes!
Thank you, Civil! I made a few early morning additions to the piece, today, one of which is a Sir David Attenborough video on their life cycle you may enjoy! In my excitement over the initial writing, I realized I took for granted that some of my readers may not be as familiar with these little (loud) creatures! Figured it may help give some context, so thanks for reminding me of that!
Hi Kristine!! Your poems are as marvelous as these cicadas are wondrous!! Thank you for sharing! Yes, I too loved that you went outside to record your poems, with their song in the background! Thank you also for sharing the David Attenborough video and extra resources, being from England and living in California this incredible 17 year journey is even more a mystery to me!! Your poems and writing is such a gift 🙏🏽
Such an exotic backing track, fits perfectly with the pace of your poems. We don't have cicadas here in Ireland.

It's nice that someone can write a beautiful piece about Cicadas
Thank you!

Thank you, Maria! I’m glad you enjoyed it! And yes, really quite a wonder!

“I see” is almost too gorgeous to take in on just one reading!
Thank you so much!
Oh I am loving this reflection, these words, the connection! So glad you shared.
Thank you, thank you!
